Trendy
by Design

The dictionary definition of ‘trend’ is as follows: “a general direction in which something is developing or changing”. For the most part beginning an exploration of a term at the dictionary definition is an unimaginative start. However it’s inclusion here is relevant, if only to highlight the difference between how people perceive trends in design, and what they actually are.

For Us,
By Us

Foucault suggested that, far from being ‘for our own good’, surveillance could be a much more malign system of social control, and of normalisation of ‘desired’ behaviours and actions, and that observation was a key part of the discourse of ‘wrongdoing’ and the identification and pre-emption of deviant attitudes. Using examples drawn from visual culture, analyse the discourse surrounding surveillance. What can the prevalence of observation tell us about contemporary culture? What are the semiotics and the politics of the fixed gaze of the CCTV camera?
